Trump Warns Canada: 100% Tariffs if You Strike a Deal with China

On 24 January 2026, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to issue a blunt warning to Canada. He threatened to slap a 100% tariff on every single Canadian good entering the United States should Ottawa go ahead with any trade agreement with China.

In characteristically forthright language, Trump wrote that China would “eat Canada alive” and “completely devour it”, ruining businesses, social fabric and the Canadian way of life. He also claimed Beijing might use Canada as a back door to dodge American tariffs on Chinese products.

The statement comes amid already strained US-Canada trade relations and follows reports of Canada exploring closer economic links with China. No full trade deal has been signed, so the threat looks largely pre-emptive.

The fallout could be severe: massive disruption to North American supply chains, higher prices for American consumers, and almost certain retaliation from Ottawa. For now, markets are jittery and everyone is watching to see whether this is classic Trump negotiation or the start of something far bigger.
