The secret in the pharmacy ledger: A story of quiet kindness

The secret in the pharmacy ledger: A story of quiet kindness

Every month for over three years, an elderly woman walked into a local pharmacy to collect the prescription medicine she desperately needed to live.

She was poor, frail, and struggling to get by, but every time she reached the counter, she was greeted by a kind young pharmacist named Ahmed Abdullah.

Her face would instantly light up when she saw him at the till. She would hand over 200 Egyptian pounds, Ahmed would smile, process the payment, and hand her the medicine. She always left with a grateful heart, believing she was paying the full price for her treatment.

Then, tragedy struck. Ahmed unexpectedly passed away.

A few weeks later, the woman returned to the pharmacy for her monthly prescription. She placed the medicine on the counter and handed over her usual 200 pounds to the new cashier.

The cashier stared at the money, confused. "Excuse me, ma'am, but what is this?"

"That’s the 200 pounds for my medication," she replied softly.

"Ma'am, this medicine costs 2,000 pounds," the cashier said.

The woman was stunned. "That can't be right. I’ve been getting this exact medicine here every month for three years from the young man who used to sit there. Where is he?"

"He passed away, ma'am. May he rest in peace."

Confused by the massive price gap, the staff checked the pharmacy records. What they uncovered left everyone speechless.

For more than 36 months, Ahmed had been secretly covering the remaining 1,800 pounds out of his own modest salary every single month. He never mentioned it to her. He never boasted about it to his colleagues. He simply bore the cost so an elderly woman would never have to choose between eating and staying alive.

Deeply moved by Ahmed’s extraordinary selflessness, the pharmacy owner made a decision on the spot: the pharmacy would continue selling the woman her medication for 200 pounds for the rest of her life, topping up the rest in Ahmed’s memory as a Sadaqah Jariyah—a continuous act of charity.

Real heroes don't ask for recognition, nor do they look for praise. They quietly make the world a warmer place, one selfless act at a time.

Rest in peace, Ahmed. Your kindness lives on
