The Great WHO Exit

The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), completing a process initiated by President Trump on his first day in office. The White House defends the move as fulfilling promises to stop funding what it calls a bureaucratic mess. Supporters argue the U.S. should focus on its own health systems, while critics warn the decision is a grave error that weakens global cooperation against pandemics.

The U.S. was one of the WHO’s largest funders, and its departure leaves a financial and leadership gap that other nations must now fill. While Washington insists this is about independence and efficiency, health experts fear the world will be less prepared for future crises. In essence, the Great WHO Exit marks a turning point in global health politics, with consequences that will unfold in the years ahead.
